"The Chinese Communist Party’s never-ending purge of corrupt officials set new records in 2023, with its anti-corruption watchdog (CCDI) launching probes into 45 senior officials, up from 32 in 2022. The record number of investigations, according to a South China Morning Post tally, came five years after Xi Jinping declared a 'crushing victory' in his war on corruption, launched in 2013.

The probes indicate that Xi won’t relax his efforts to clean up China’s officialdom and ensure strict implementation of his policies. Yet he risks paralysing his Party, warned The Wall Street Journal’s Chun Han Wong. The CCDI holds its third plenum from January 8 to set work priorities for tens of millions of discipline inspectors nationwide. Investigators no longer follow the previous unspoken rule that retired officials are off limits."
